MG-SOFT Net Inspector up to 6.5.0.828 path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in MG-SOFT Net Inspector up to 6.5.0.828. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the Net Inspector HTTP Server (mghttpd) in MG-SOFT Net Inspector 6.5.0.828 and earlier for Windows allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a "..\" (dot dot backslash) or "../" (dot dot slash) in the URI.

The weakness was published 03/20/2008 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-1400 since 03/19/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Luigi Auriemma and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (5269), SecurityFocus (BID 28266†) and Secunia (SA29421†). Similar entries are available at VDB-41612 and VDB-41611. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
