Details
A vulnerability was found in Unicenter Asset Management up to R11.2. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file listctrl.ocx of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the ListCtrl ActiveX Control (ListCtrl.ocx), as used in multiple CA products including BrightStor ARCserve Backup R11.5, Desktop Management Suite r11.1 through r11.2, and Unicenter products r11.1 through r11.2, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (crash) via a long argument to the AddColumn method.
The bug was discovered 03/16/2008. The weakness was shared 03/24/2008 by Krystian Kloskowski (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1472 since 03/24/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/01/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31731 (CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup ListCtrl ActiveX (ListCtrl.ocx) AddColumn() Method Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115752 (CA (Computer Associates) BrightStor ARCserve Backup ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8821.
