The _bad_protocol_once function in phpgwapi/inc/class.kses.inc.php in KSES, as used in eGroupWare before 1.4.003, Moodle before 1.8.5, and other products, allows remote attackers to bypass HTML filtering and conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a string containing crafted URL protocols.

The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1502. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33459 (Fedora 8 : moodle-1.8.5-1.fc8 (2008-6226)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
