A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ISC BIND up to 8.4.1 (Domain Name Software). This affects an unknown code of the component Reply Handler. The manipulation as part of a Negative Reply leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. ISC BIND 8.3.x before 8.3.7, and 8.4.x before 8.4.3, allows remote attackers to poison the cache via a malicious name server that returns negative responses with a large TTL (time-to-live) value.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2003. The weakness was disclosed 11/27/2003 with ISC (Website). The advisory is shared at isc.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0914 since 11/04/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 8.3.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at isc.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
