Project-MONAI up to 1.6.0 nnUNetV2Runner inference_information.json predict_ensemble_postprocessing postprocessing_file deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Project-MONAI MONAI up to 1.6.0. This issue affects the function predict_ensemble_postprocessing of the file inference_information.json of the component nnUNetV2Runner. This manipulation of the argument postprocessing_file causes deserialization. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-109361. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Project-MONAI MONAI up to 1.6.0. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function predict_ensemble_postprocessing of the file inference_information.json of the component nnUNetV2Runner. The manipulation of the argument postprocessing_file with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

MONAI 1.2.0 before 1.6.1 contains an insecure deserialization vulnerability in nnUNetV2Runner that unpickles the postprocessing_file path read from inference_information.json without confining it to the results directory. Attackers who can modify inference_information.json can point it at a malicious pickle elsewhere on the filesystem to execute code when predict_ensemble_postprocessing runs.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-109361 since 10/12/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

By approaching the search of inurl:inference_information.json it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 1.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
