Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM PowerVM Hypervisor up to FW1060.81. It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Service Processor Mailbox Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IBM Power Systems Firmware FW1060.00 through FW1060.81 is affected by a vulnerability in the service processor mailbox interface. An attacker with authenticated service-level access to the FSP can send a specially crafted mailbox message to overflow host firmware runtime attribute storage, allowing arbitrary code to be executed in the host firmware runtime. This gives the attacker full access to the managed system's memory and hardware interfaces, resulting in a confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact to the managed system.
The advisory is shared at ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-96262 since 09/22/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/12/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
