Details
A vulnerability has been found in oraios Serena up to 1.x and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Project.is_path_in_project of the component Link Resolution. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Serena before 2.0.0 contains an improper link resolution vulnerability that allows attackers to access files outside the project root by committing symlinks inside a repository. Project.is_path_in_project() normalizes paths lexically without resolving symlinks, so file tools like read_file and create_text_file can read or overwrite files such as SSH keys or cloud credentials.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-109965 since 10/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
