Details
A vulnerability was found in MongoDB Server up to 8.3.12/9.0.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Write Routing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authorization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-285. A security issue was discovered in MongoDB mongos (the sharded cluster router) where an authenticated user with readWrite privileges could crash the mongos process by crafting a specially formed aggregation pipeline. The issue leverages an internal aggregation stage that lacks proper authorization checks despite being intended for internal use, allowing a subsequent stage to be forced to execute on the router under conditions it was not designed to handle. This results in an unhandled fatal error that causes the mongos process to immediately abort, resulting in denial of service for all clients routed through the affected mongos instance.
The advisory is shared for download at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-104005 since 10/01/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1548.002.
