Samba up to 3.5.4 SID Parser sid_parse memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Samba up to 3.5.4 (File Transfer Software). Affected by this issue is the function sid_parse of the component SID Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the (1) sid_parse and (2) dom_sid_parse functions in Samba before 3.5.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Windows Security ID (SID) on a file share.

The weakness was presented 09/14/2010 by Andrew Bartlett with Cisco (Website). The advisory is available at us1.samba.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3069 since 08/20/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68101 (Oracle Linux 5 : samba3x (ELSA-2010-0698)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216028 (VMware ESX 4.x Third Party Updates for Service Console (VMSA-2010-0019)).

Upgrading to version 3.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at us1.samba.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10599.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61773), Tenable (68101), SecurityFocus (BID 43212†), OSVDB (67994†) and Secunia (SA42531†). See VDB-4206 and VDB-47373 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
