Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 157. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component libmime. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Several buffer-growth sites in libmime performed size arithmetic in 32-bit types without overflow checks. On a sufficiently large message the growth guard could fail open, or the buffer could be reallocated smaller than required, and a subsequent memcpy would then write attacker-controlled data across adjacent heap allocations. This vulnerability was fixed in Thunderbird 158.
The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-110247 since 10/13/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/13/2026).
Upgrading to version 158 eliminates this vulnerability.
