Vifm up to 0.14.4 IPC os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Vifm up to 0.14.4. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component IPC. Such manipulation leads to os command injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2026-110237. The attack needs to be performed locally. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Vifm up to 0.14.4 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component IPC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Vifm 0.8.1-beta through 0.14.4 reuses a pre-existing IPC FIFO in the shared temporary directory without checking ownership, allowing local users to execute commands as another user. Attackers can pre-create a world-writable vifm-ipc-vifm FIFO and write IPC packets with -c and ! shell commands that execute with the victim's privileges.

The advisory is shared for download at hackmd.io. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-110237 since 10/13/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
