Microsoft Windows RPC Processor RPC Response code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Microsoft Windows. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component RPC Processor. The manipulation as part of RPC Response leads to code injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2010-2567. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RPC Processor. The manipulation as part of a RPC Response leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The RPC client implementation in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 does not properly allocate memory during the parsing of responses, which allows remote RPC servers and man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed response, aka "RPC Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 09/14/2010 by Yamata Li with Palo Alto Networks as MS10-066 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2567 since 06/30/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49224 (MS10-066: Vulnerability in Remote Procedure Call Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90637 (Microsoft Windows Remote Procedure Call Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-066)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-066 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61499), Tenable (49224), SecurityFocus (BID 43119†), OSVDB (67981†) and Secunia (SA41412†).
