CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

inetd on Sun Solaris 10, when debug logging is enabled, allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on the /var/tmp/inetd.log temporary file.

The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was disclosed 04/06/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-1684 since 04/06/2008. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1159 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31759 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 127718-05), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115776 (Sun Solaris 10 inetd(1M) Daemon Issue When Debug Logging is Enabled (1019015.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41626), Tenable (31759), SecurityFocus (BID 28584†), OSVDB (44038†) and Secunia (SA29654†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
