A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in phpMyAdmin (Database Administration Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file setup.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The configuration setup script (aka scripts/setup.php) in phpMyAdmin 2.11.x before 2.11.10.1 does not properly restrict key names in its output file, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted POST request.

The weakness was presented 08/20/2010 by Takeshi Terada with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions (Website). The advisory is shared for download at phpmyadmin.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3055 since 08/19/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:setup.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48908 (phpMyAdmin setup.php Arbitrary PHP Code Execution (PMASA-2010-4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12489 (phpMyAdmin Configuration File PHP Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at phpmyadmin.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9887.
