Details
A vulnerability has been found in IBM Lotus Notes 7.0.3 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code in the library emlsr.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in emlsr.dll in the EML reader in Autonomy (formerly Verity) KeyView 10.3.0.0, as used by IBM Lotus Notes, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long (1) To, (2) Cc, (3) Bcc, (4) From, (5) Date, (6) Subject, (7) Priority, (8) Importance, or (9) X-MSMail-Priority header; (10) a long string at the beginning of an RFC2047 encoded-word in a header; (11) a long text string in an RFC2047 encoded-word in a header; or (12) a long Subject header, related to creation of an associated filename.
The bug was discovered 04/08/2008. The weakness was shared 04/10/2008 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5399 since 10/12/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68936 (Symantec Mail Security for SMTP Autonomy KeyView Module Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115778 (IBM Lotus Notes Multiple KeyView Parsing Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8800.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41723), Tenable (68936), SecurityFocus (BID 28454†), OSVDB (44196†) and Secunia (SA28209†). The entries VDB-41905, VDB-41904, VDB-41903 and VDB-41902 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
