Details
A vulnerability was found in CUPS 1.3 (Printing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in (1) filter/image-png.c and (2) filter/image-zoom.c in CUPS 1.3 allow attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and trigger memory corruption, as demonstrated via a crafted PNG image.
The bug was discovered 04/08/2008. The weakness was shared 04/08/2008 by Thomas Pollet as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1722 since 04/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67699 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : cups (ELSA-2008-0498)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117282 (CentOS Security Update for CUPS (CESA-2008:0498)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42910), Tenable (67699), SecurityFocus (BID 28781†), OSVDB (44398†) and Secunia (SA29809†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
