Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.110/6.18.52/7.2.6/7.3-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function unix_stream_read_generic of the component af_unix. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_unix: Return immediately when manage_oob() returns NULL for 0-length buffer. Fahad Alharbi reported that recv(0, MSG_PEEK) triggers busy-wait in unix_stream_read_generic() if recv() is blocking and the last skb in the queue is MSG_OOB skb. In such a situation, TCP returns 0 immediately regardless of blocking or non-blocking. Let's follow the behaviour.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98394 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.12.111, 6.18.53, 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3d3c7a3df66b2ca3d2cd1a2a0c37eb701feba713/d5dd55b316ca229a4cbf11729483ba5bb57233e7/c81c5be3826c8467945b964d0cf7f7b3d65461db/6e5ee08eb5858d175da6768d75d163817b6a9d4a is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
