Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3 RDMA EFA race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component RDMA EFA. Such manipulation leads to race condition. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-98429. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc3. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component RDMA EFA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/efa: Keep EQ resources alive while IRQ is registered The completion IRQ handler accesses the EQ state and DMA buffer. Its IRQ was registered before that state was initialized, while teardown released the buffer before free_irq() synchronized the handler. Initialize the EQ without arming it, register the IRQ, and then arm it. Reverse the resource order during teardown by freeing the IRQ before destroying the EQ.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98429 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/14/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3cd652dfcd822af26ba75d6d2d245ea7f73b499e/c767e2812cac83fef70fb8932c3f0fe97dff9388/795eb34bfd8b1ab347adc41a11e4bb97c3ac0ce6/38871ff47e2a02f8d9a333a65f358d987247b5b0/9ecd3dcbdf1f315aadc049b291f59c79dc478062/e22a3627b7151754f07f90ea3d1ab6e85f5d93f4 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
