A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 7 (Database Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Administration Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
db2dasrrm in the DB2 Administration Server (DAS) in IBM DB2 Universal Database 9.5 before Fix Pack 1, 9.1 before Fix Pack 4a, and 8 before FixPak 16 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on files used for initialization.
The bug was discovered 04/15/2008. The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-5664 since 10/23/2007. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 8 eliminates this vulnerability.
