Details
A vulnerability was found in gitpython-developers GitPython up to 3.1.x. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function Git.ls_remote/merge_base/IndexFile.move of the component Remote Helper/Index File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
GitPython before 3.2.0 contains a remote code execution vulnerability that allows attackers to run commands because Git.ls_remote forwards URLs without check_unsafe_protocols validation. Attackers can supply ext:: remote-helper URLs to execute commands when git permits the ext transport, while merge_base and IndexFile.move also accept unguarded option injection.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-110857 since 10/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1055.
Upgrading to version 3.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
