Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in VMware Player, Workstation, ESX and ESXi 2.x/6.x (Virtualization Software). This issue affects an unknown code block in the library libpng. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The png_decompress_chunk function in pngrutil.c in libpng 1.0.x before 1.0.53, 1.2.x before 1.2.43, and 1.4.x before 1.4.1 does not properly handle compressed ancillary-chunk data that has a disproportionately large uncompressed representation, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory and CPU consumption, and application hang) via a crafted PNG file, as demonstrated by use of the deflate compression method on data composed of many occurrences of the same character, related to a "decompression bomb" attack.
The weakness was published 09/24/2010 with VMware (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0205 since 01/06/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45584 (FreeBSD : png -- libpng decompression denial of service (4fb5d2cd-4c77-11df-83fb-0015587e2cc1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155642 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libpng (ELSA-2010-0534)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.vmware.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
