Details
A vulnerability has been found in SoX up to 14.4.2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function lsx_ms_adpcm_block_expand_i of the file src/adpcm.c of the component WAV File Handler. The manipulation of the argument samplesPerBlock with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SoX through 14.4.2 contains a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in lsx_ms_adpcm_block_expand_i() in src/adpcm.c, triggered by an odd samplesPerBlock value in the WAV fmt chunk. Attackers can supply a crafted MS ADPCM WAV file to sox or any libsox consumer to write a partially controlled 16-bit sample past the heap buffer allocated by wav_ms_adpcm_fmt().
The advisory is available at hackmd.io. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-111157 since 10/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/15/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
