Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in NIFTI-Imaging nifti_clib up to 3.0.1. This affects the function nifti_convert_n2hdr2nim. Such manipulation of the argument dim[0] leads to stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-111275. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in NIFTI-Imaging nifti_clib up to 3.0.1. Affected by this issue is the function nifti_convert_n2hdr2nim. The manipulation of the argument dim[0] with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
nifti_clib through 3.0.1 contains a stack-based out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability in nifti_convert_n2hdr2nim() because the NIfTI-2 dim[0] value is never range-checked. Attackers can supply a crafted 540-byte NIfTI-2 header read via nifti_image_read() to crash applications or corrupt stack memory.
The advisory is available at hackmd.io. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-111275 since 10/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/16/2026).
