RIOT-OS RIOT 2026.04 DHCPv6 Client client.c _parse_reply memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in RIOT-OS RIOT. This vulnerability affects the function _parse_reply of the file sys/net/application_layer/dhcpv6/client.c of the component DHCPv6 Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

RIOT is an open-source microcontroller operating system designed for Internet of Things devices and other embedded systems. Prior to 2026.07, _parse_reply() in sys/net/application_layer/dhcpv6/client.c omits minimum-length validation before passing IA_PD and IA_NA option bodies to sub-option parsers. A malicious or compromised DHCPv6 server can send a REPLY with an option length smaller than the required structure while MODULE_DHCPV6_CLIENT_IA_PD is enabled, causing _parse_ia_pd_option to read past the option body, size_t underflow, and unbounded out-of-bounds heap reads that can crash the device and may expose or corrupt memory. This issue is fixed in version 2026.07.

The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-49868 since 06/02/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/16/2026).

Upgrading to version 2026.07 eliminates this vulnerability.
