Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.8/7.3-rc4 SMB Client SMB2_open release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function SMB2_open of the component SMB Client. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: close handle after create-context parsing failure SMB2_open() accounts a successful CREATE response as a remote open before parsing its create contexts. If smb2_parse_contexts() rejects malformed context data, SMB2_open() returns without closing the handle, leaving the server-side handle open and num_remote_opens elevated. Close the handle after a post-CREATE context parsing failure so the error path releases the remote resource and balances the open count.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98453 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 80c67cc71d32ccafc89a29b669243b40d81b930f/f09875ff901e933e7b22c913daf51d21e9d93a45/cdb36b09fb1f86d638d0afb44d621ed3f7c1d8eb/566820af017e81497fb5e9d3ad6e7ffe2828bc8b is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
