CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. The affected element is the function gpio_desc_to_lineinfo of the component cdev. This manipulation causes stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98528. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function gpio_desc_to_lineinfo of the component cdev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: cdev: fix kernel stack leak to user-space in error path If we fail to acquire the GPIO chip guard in gpio_desc_to_lineinfo(), we return immediately before zeroing the info struct we'll end up passing to the user-space later in lineinfo_get_v1(). This may leak the kernel stack contents. Make gpio_desc_to_lineinfo() return int so that the -ENODEV returned on failure to acquire the guard can be propagated to the callers. While not strictly necessary: move the memset() before trying to acquire the SRCU read lock too for good measure.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98528 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8460ee5216ab9a38263b01dca4b0a27e083f70f3/cf3d043582e106a0e57002bec8a6de8929ba3e1c/60a466f231905cd96ae6f0f3c44a710c97873dac/1feb5d39b05afd902ed9fc902ec5b15be03a4bdb is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
