Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 fman fsl/fman read_dts_node release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. Affected is the function read_dts_node of the file fsl/fman of the component fman. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fsl/fman: Fix clk reference leak in read_dts_node() of_clk_get() returns a clock with its reference count incremented, but read_dts_node() only uses it to read the rate and never calls clk_put(). The clock is not stored anywhere, so the reference cannot be released later either. Release the clock once its rate has been read, which also covers the error path taken when the rate is zero.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98535 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 874fd58b321a9238e47c2a46345444287f2a5781/c2edf376d7804279878b207d93ffe6009c8d3d29/5c90f99ba74b55ddd8e919224921033cc4077f01/e560bdf62b11dcaa2a018345f76869d89ed43a9e/9fd6d0861ae2fd44c771d6bc93b29bbc1202fe8e/c2a5e591858629b6c0e284010d2ccdbc22fd0a43/cb52f9f188c3174761ad3b37db9de751e002b52c/a644f09b2090ad22a13fbcf9d141084f573108ef is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
