Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 Mtd Core __get_mtd_device input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as very critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. This issue affects the function __get_mtd_device of the component Mtd Core. This manipulation causes input validation. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-98833. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __get_mtd_device of the component Mtd Core. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mtd: core: call _get_device() with the master MTD __get_mtd_device() calls the master's _get_device() callback with mtd, which may be a partition. __put_mtd_device() passes the master. This breaks gluebi partitions because gluebi_get_device() uses container_of() and therefore requires the master MTD. Pass the master to _get_device(), matching _put_device().

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98833 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 95c8f36293c22d450c371167ad4f9a5bbadc7539/f971f1c63cf71579258360a12bd185bc1cd1a043/dc482a281a19a7d7e91ad1b2d551bb301c54d0e6/12b31d1acd20b3185bb5f0748db0cf6874c8e9d1 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
