Linux Kernel up to 7.2.9/7.3-rc4 sched_ext ops.dequeue deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98865. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2.9/7.3-rc4. Affected is the function ops.dequeue of the component sched_ext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sched_ext: Don't run ops.dequeue() with a DSQ lock held ops.dequeue() is invoked with the source user DSQ's lock still held on the consume and move paths (scx_consume_dispatch_q(), move_task_between_dsqs()). A BPF scheduler which locks the source user DSQ from ops.dequeue() - e.g. by iterating it with bpf_iter_scx_dsq - self-deadlocks. ops.dequeue() can only call the "any" kfuncs and none of them can lock a builtin DSQ, so the global and bypass paths can't deadlock; however, all DSQ locks share one lockdep class, so iterating any user DSQ from ops.dequeue() on those paths trips the recursion check. Move the invocation after the DSQ unlock on all three paths. SCX_TASK_IN_CUSTODY is cleared under the lock serializing the transfer so that the callback is invoked exactly once.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98865 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
