Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. Affected is the function get_unaligned_le32 of the component Firmware Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: proximity: aw96103: validate firmware data length The firmware parser reads a length from the binary header and then uses it to walk six-byte register/value entries. A truncated firmware image can make the parser read beyond the copied firmware buffer. A value smaller than the four-byte count field also underflows, producing a very large length. Read the little-endian field with get_unaligned_le32(), as previously proposed by David Lechner. Validate the header size, reject an underflowed length, ensure the resulting payload is contained in the firmware image, and require it to contain whole register/value entries.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98658 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4a9b9f2d4e26589afd0ac099c8e5593170dd5ac7/6501b032be217ecf47e793b78a05078cf0b604ad/815ae0b73b69ace207b6bbf7ef428b06491c3ddb/1a7c522a35477d70320bd64aba8e9de0c1058c6f is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
