Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 adis16480 debugfs_create_file information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function debugfs_create_file of the component adis16480. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: imu: adis16480: fix unprotected debugfs reads The firmware_revision and firmware_date file operations are open coded and never call debugfs_file_get(), which debugfs_create_file_unsafe() requires. debugfs_remove_recursive() therefore does not wait for a read in progress, and unbind frees the iio_dev underneath it. Use debugfs_create_file() instead.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98663 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b7e507c6da8875da93b4130c8185e82a9dfd565c/ce308ce18dedc18e9eeff8473892975e6fdd7aef/396b83106f5e7d16467049f0caabd10533c01a0e/e1dea54496f90a62318cf4eeaa1e9ef8316e92b6 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
