It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function bmp280_write_sampling_frequency of the component bmp280. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: pressure: bmp280: fix out-of-bounds access in sampling frequency lookup The sampling frequency tables store each frequency as an integer part and a fractional part in micro units. num_sampling_freq_avail is initialized to the number of flattened integer elements because read_avail() returns the table as a flat array. bmp280_write_sampling_frequency(), however, indexes the same table as a two-dimensional array and uses num_sampling_freq_avail as the number of rows. Convert the flattened element count back to the number of rows before iterating over the table.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98660 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9db6684fab228edd3b8861a172ccbce3236f027a/4fd5a61e61d6899cbd45728a5fceba49a53c222d/7dbb518f3328ebd9d5c6e970b4befad6deb5c7f1/56c423b233b214182c58c99861899327b45b0d6c is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
