Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 IRQ xilinx-xadc.c zynq_unmask_work use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. This vulnerability affects the function zynq_unmask_work of the file xilinx-xadc.c of the component IRQ Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: xilinx-xadc: free IRQ before cancelling the unmask worker on unbind The ZYNQ XADC alarm IRQ handler queues zynq_unmask_work via schedule_delayed_work(); that work is cleared by a devm callback. Register the devm callback before devm_request_irq() so the devres LIFO teardown frees the IRQ first, ensuring the handler can no longer queue work by the time the workqueue is cleared. Otherwise the handler could re-arm the work and run it after the xadc structure has been freed. This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98670 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a29d385ad7b340c952a3935af2b33488db1eb3a6/a5fe2d1b55faba6d00fd87ad491b6cb603046304/49ea8a359e362bfbb32a647c8eb7962fbb37234e/0f3f427076240e75ff265e61645627a71ca4918c is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
