CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. Affected by this issue is the function ad_sd_buffer_postenable of the component iio adc ad_sigma_delta. Executing a manipulation of the argument samples_buf can lead to use after free. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98677. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function ad_sd_buffer_postenable of the component iio adc ad_sigma_delta. The manipulation of the argument samples_buf with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: ad_sigma_delta: fix use-after-free on unbind ad_sd_buffer_postenable() allocates sigma_delta->samples_buf with devm_krealloc() at runtime, so its devres entry sits after all probe-time entries of the driver. devm resources are released in reverse allocation order, which means unbind frees samples_buf before iio_device_unregister() disables the buffers and detaches the trigger pollfunc. The data ready IRQ is still enabled at that point, so ad_sd_trigger_handler() can still run and memcpy() incoming samples into the freed samples_buf. Fix this by preallocating the buffer in devm_ad_sd_setup_buffer_and_trigger(), before the triggered buffer and the IRQ are set up, so it is freed only after iio_device_unregister() has drained the trigger handler via free_irq(). Size it for the worst case of all sequencer slots being active; ad_sd_validate_scan_mask() already caps the number of active channels at num_slots. This issue was found by an in-house static analysis tool.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98677 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 84500ae0d976995a6870cb1dca2d124b6b2d6e5a/f20b94a7dc1ff9ade191ce839c984210fdbdc653/5663c72bf400231e90777982216797191887a6b9/9ee8306121495d2a25aa5d1bfd519f2748786b83 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
