Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ade9000_setup_clkout of the component ade9000 Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: adc: ade9000: fix NULL pointer dereference in clkout registration ade9000_setup_clkout() passes NULL as the register address when registering a divider clock. During clock registration, the common clock framework calls clk_divider_recalc_rate(), which dereferences the address through readl(). As a result, probing an ADE9000 configured as a clock provider with an external input clock crashes. CLKOUT passes CLKIN through without changing its rate. Register it as a 1:1 fixed-factor clock, which does not require register access. This change does not affect the configuration using the internal clock, for which the driver does not register a clock provider.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98676 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d2400175228fbc10b29c49a7b5f70a7e80d144dd/134aa31a8d4e71f6ab1d155ad7b4502508832f72/49ee1c6a3ebda6b7de06b2961b0e09c1c3fe536a is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
