Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in WatchFire AppScan 7.0. Affected is an unknown part of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple absolute path traversal vulnerabilities in certain ActiveX controls in WatchFire AppScan 7.0 allow remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a full pathname in the argument to the (1) CompactSave and (2) SaveSession method in one control, and the (3) saveRecordedExploreToFile method in a different control. NOTE: this can be leveraged for code execution by writing to a Startup folder.
The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2008 by callAX (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
