Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 KVM SVM permission

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component KVM SVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-275. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: SVM: Use the active VMCB's MSR bitmap when checking if MSR is intercepted Use the MSR permission bitmap of the active VMCB instead of assuming that KVM is always using vmcb02's bitmap when L2 is active, as KVM uses msrpm02 if and only if L1 wants to intercept MSR accesses, i.e. if and only if KVM needs to merge msprm01 with msrpm12. Don't bother tracking the virtual address of the bitmap that's being used, as __va() is cheap on x86, and caching the virtual address would introduce yet another source of potentially stale information.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98716 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1222.

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 74836ae4785b9754bb36d0b18fcc1dec4e5e98d2/318ef696fa3c712e46bb62a1a828c3cd62f390c3/55865b3ae03705aa39198783b9cb1f8b96eb44e4/9e06bbb9ade7cdf28d4a3b5b14e5812881c8df85 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
