Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5 dwc2 dwc2_hcd_release race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. It has been declared as very critical. The affected element is the function dwc2_hcd_release of the component dwc2. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98762. It is possible to launch the attack on the local host. There is not any exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. This vulnerability affects the function dwc2_hcd_release of the component dwc2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: dwc2: shut down wakeup timer before freeing HCD state dwc2_wakeup_detected() accesses the DWC2 host state and can rearm the wakeup timer. dwc2_hcd_free() currently deletes the timer only after freeing host-owned state, and timer_delete() does not synchronize a callback or prevent it from being queued again. Stop and shut down the timer in dwc2_hcd_release(), before the HCD resources are freed. This covers both the HCD initialization error path and normal HCD removal.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98762 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 441be312fce927443eae2821f502344d953c38bb/4333174ea52c863a50bb3e0a4726bf9f7cdf7524/79ba37dd38a321cb32a79332a3e3c68dd334dca9/fd772af9512cdecb83de34a461801533828e77fd is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
