Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.112/6.18.55/7.2.9/7.3-rc5. This vulnerability affects the function vcc_cleanup of the component vcc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tty: vcc: hold port lock when clearing tty pointer in vcc_cleanup vcc_cleanup() sets port->tty to NULL without holding port->lock, racing with vcc_event() LDC callbacks that read port->tty under port->lock and then use tty->port. This can cause a use-after-free when the callback dereferences tty->port after cleanup has already destroyed and freed it.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98754 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.12.113, 6.18.56, 7.2.10 or 7.3-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 88f6ecb058801e9ce7b9aabc966530118d7cd53c/821050631750e982007c0856c119346edba51cae/1a9fb9eaeb69b1f6c00bed09289a33d9fe1e7ae4/03b49c991abb8d021ca6fe51cd173447236b0552 is able to eliminate this problem.
