Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 BPF comparison

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as very critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. Affected is an unknown function of the component BPF. The manipulation leads to comparison. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98572. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. There is no exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component BPF. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a comparison vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-697. The product compares two entities in a security-relevant context, but the comparison is incorrect, which may lead to resultant weaknesses. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix immediate JMP JEQ/JNE on MIPS32 An addu instruction was emitted instead of addiu, causing the immediate value 1 to be interpreted as register $at. This made the comparison result invalid when the immediate operand was negative. Note that $at is mapped to BPF_REG_AX, which is used for constant blinding. Fix the instruction to use the immediate form. Found with test_bpf on MIPS32r1 emulated by QEMU.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-98572 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1547e9f3a7d71971216e6dba30270cae13fe4e02/beeae92e70e705e90a0d6d9b3b8498ee3b92f495/6f939529ed6c580e9b6c5daa20be67fa0b3d4cf0/876ef04c75c2751acfd355606fca3eced71dec65/1bd91670966a7142ac94f2cebe2b5ae6bf5cb0c8/db762fd96be225bd06161c9631160c755d891693 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
