Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 VXLAN vxlan_na_create memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.157/6.12.111/6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function vxlan_na_create of the component VXLAN. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vxlan: use one headroom snapshot for neighbour replies vxlan_na_create() samples LL_RESERVED_SPACE() to size the reply skb and then samples it again to reserve headroom. A concurrent vxlan_changelink() can update needed_headroom between the two reads, creating a TOCTOU race. The second value can exceed the allocation and make the Ethernet header write out of bounds. The race is reproducible on the unpatched kernel. It occurred when vxlan_na_create() generated a neighbour reply while vxlan_changelink() changed the link headroom. KASAN caught a four-byte write two bytes beyond a 704-byte skbuff_small_head allocation. Snapshot the headroom once and use that value for both allocation and reservation.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98568 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 45a67662bf8ce3aa5643accf98d328dfbb47eaf6/315d42ca39f69846662961c25dcf2bb07c350d14/a3c5eb6e382dd426a5e7eb08608897ed57167ff7/ff022fd9d0f0282c575e11778b96bd1b637503eb/481506a756dcd828ef42391cb08f38d8d96d38fc is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
