Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 pn533 pn533_acr122_is_rx_frame_valid out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function pn533_acr122_is_rx_frame_valid of the component pn533. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfc: pn533: fix OOB read in pn533_acr122_is_rx_frame_valid() frame->ccid.datalen is read directly from the USB response frame and used, unchecked, as an index into frame->data[]. A malicious or malfunctioning device can set this field to an arbitrary value, causing the driver to read far outside the received buffer. Bound ccid.datalen against the maximum possible ACR122 frame size before using it. This replaces the existing datalen == 0 check, since datalen < 2 already covers that case and additionally rejects datalen == 1, which would still underflow the "datalen - 2" offset used below.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98575 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8db3b1e012a8b25078dfa1efabe3d0cd2916dcba/74b3fbc60907ee97e3af3249091f57351b53a6d6/8a0f1bb790d964893db7fc59febda9a534db07b3/ea82b7576793219fa10a8b545f8338998b2a9ce2/72b8b2126e854d6756a1aa4bdc66d7457b832294/e72cbedc4596e808d22dd2b9fff666ece76f8dd6/2450a388367231fb7dd798538f393af227c00c4d/b61732f47316d45f27706db7812950145d3327b5 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
