Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function roundup_pow_of_two of the component fbnic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: eth: fbnic: Avoid rounding zero ring sizes roundup_pow_of_two() is undefined for zero. ethtool permits a zero ring size to reach the driver, where the minimum-size check should reject it. Leave zero unchanged while rounding nonzero ring sizes. The minimum-size check then rejects zero deterministically without changing the established behavior for other values.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98585 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 92c9f2ea634d92adff5403d231ebeda683c5685a/491aa3167ae02f219cb2d2de6f4196d28dca03be/0160953d8eec75c3c55562158c46442ff1fd410b is able to eliminate this problem.
