Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 s390 debug_info_copy null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. The affected element is the function debug_info_copy of the component s390. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-98593. The attack requires local access. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function debug_info_copy of the component s390. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/debug: Fix NULL pointer dereference in debug_info_copy() When debug_register_static() fails, it clears areas, active_pages and active_entries but leaves the area bounds unchanged. Copying such an area, either by opening its view file or via debug_dump(), makes debug_info_copy() dereference the NULL pointers. Skip the copy loop when the source has no areas.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98593 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 13decd3b3b3a4d8a2e603fb8c9ffde0c6be3c225/a19bede30f0da5ae56782edac62b5998a7434cba/33f706884821da9cb55b650b7b1d4f2bdf800137/2de9c458cc49d8db6408a7c5fbf0c7c94fe4d52b/9c6af88fbefbe77608b77409df23a1617e28398c/c593f38e1cdb92f87d01be4c4e5ac12417b1454b/012bfcd5a51082d5a65f096dfb9ca652b5267965 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
