Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 Squashfs squashfs_xz_comp_opts dict_size out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function squashfs_xz_comp_opts of the component Squashfs. The manipulation of the argument dict_size with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: squashfs: Add dictionary size range check to prevent shift-out-of-bounds When an abnormal SquashFS image (COMP_OPTS flag is 1 but dictionary size is 0) is mounted, and performs shift operations using dictionarysize, the shift exponent is -1, causing a shift-out-of-bounds. Detail as below: squashfs_comp_opts(msblk, buffer, length) squashfs_xz_comp_opts() if (comp_opts) n = ffs(opts->dict_size) - 1;<----opts->dict_size=0, n=-1 if (opts->dict_size != (1 << n) && opts->dict_size != (1 << n) + (1 << (n + 1))) <----shift-out-of-bounds Fix it by adding a dictionary size range check before the shift operation.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98636 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b02948a23455f8190a53887b2d2c13ae1d360cea/9d9c5c218ea356a1d88765214ad2919605280ab1/7a1c293e7aa17f1afaee0684e0e931fe23a5a6b1/c68e0068a236f9a7dfc19720bdf11e5d80a85089/88c673a0bd233df44ca0020da82f4fd3876de27a/0cb85377daaefb4ce5ce72975f2deb27ee0e0cad/e1ca4e3a380ef3e8f46ce006f1146392e3f32c98/1f7745fb3580152ca902ef181b605f33cabfb1d0 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
