Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 port100 port100_recv_response datalen/actual_length out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 and classified as very critical. This impacts the function port100_recv_response of the component port100. Performing a manipulation of the argument datalen/actual_length results in out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-98481. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. This affects the function port100_recv_response of the component port100. The manipulation of the argument datalen/actual_length with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfc: port100: reject frames whose declared length exceeds the received data port100_recv_response() passes the URB transfer buffer to port100_rx_frame_is_valid(), which checksums le16_to_cpu(frame->datalen) bytes of frame->data. datalen is a 16-bit field supplied by the device and is never checked against the number of bytes actually received (urb->actual_length), so a device reporting a datalen larger than the received frame makes port100_data_checksum() read out of bounds past the transfer buffer. Reject a response whose declared frame size does not fit the received length before validating it. Found by 0sec (https://0sec.ai) using automated source analysis; the missing bound is evident from source. Compile-tested.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98481 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0d482995f0cdd0302450aa300c684c642d8ab31f/9e8df087826b9999d1b83b06f5d85675d5a69c9e/db66a30588630c7de30ef033f00daddef69f6ad9/144ad477c381e2c592b64898d04ab4ce03b32861/e4da1452e10c6472a4bac48dc2f6a35fff1fcd69/14b1467cfc6630583650f33538174c5a1ec685ab/035056e07ea65be670284246d9bc62f2f00ff4a3/092c6a605cbd6414ef499834c2e0da69c2c3388e is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
