Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 atl1 resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component atl1. Such manipulation leads to resource consumption. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-98494. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.3-rc4 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component atl1. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: atl1: fix soft lockup on out-of-range cmb_tpd_next_to_clean read Same issue as atl1c (see the first commit in this series, "net: atl1c: fix soft lockup on out-of-range tpd_cons read"): the hardware can report an out-of-range cmb_tpd_next_to_clean (seen as 0xffff) while the PCIe link/MAC is resetting. An out-of-range value can never be reached and the loop below would spin forever. Treat it as "nothing new to clean" instead.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98494 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

Upgrading to version 5.10.271, 5.15.222, 6.1.189, 6.6.158, 6.12.112, 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5d7ac337d37cb97d77e4c910d37746694b606661/c55e51d5899e80f9593b26985ed0b89e0c828a5e/6ab9f61ca851f02ae4398cebaf00735a22e1d6ca/632cd7b81cb7bab36112f02eb2ee7f7cc1214fb1/79e2447b11322c27ef9ac423be0a94efc7691f02/0f573b0576252d44fb27ab8470ea873bc6408ef3/6285919d4c06254d257d24dc980f6332e1984a82/43e746821f5f5afbbf68e388bf9fbe221e03bfca is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
