Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. Affected is the function page_pool_destroy of the component fbnic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: eth: fbnic: Fix payload page pool error cleanup The payload page pool pointer contains an error pointer when its allocation fails. The cleanup path passes that error pointer to page_pool_destroy() instead of destroying the header page pool. This can dereference the error pointer and leave the header page pool allocated. Destroy the header page pool instead.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-98630 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability.
