Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function nxp_process_fw_dump of the component btnxpuart. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: btnxpuart: Fix skb leak in nxp_process_fw_dump() When CONFIG_DEV_COREDUMP=n, hci_devcd_append() returns -EOPNOTSUPP without freeing its skb argument. This leaks the cloned skb and also prevents nxp_set_ind_reset() from being called to perform recovery. Fix by guarding the hci_devcd_append(hdev, skb_clone(skb, GFP_ATOMIC)) call with IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_DEV_COREDUMP).
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-98633 since 09/25/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/18/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8a36598050cd1e5abb1d5ed42cc224cfcb538c4f/edcb84ee607a9ddfc6f2771a7f399115f0b0f19d/f2bbb36426581045a8bf7793da5419b9375e4348 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
