Linux Kernel up to 6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4 s390 uv find_secret_in_page out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.54/7.2.8/7.3-rc4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function find_secret_in_page of the component s390 uv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: s390/uv: Prevent potential out-of-bounds read When the system has more than 85 secrets, the uv_secret_list struct array only holds up to 85 items per page, resulting in an out of bounds read in find_secret_in_page if the targeted secret is in the next page or not stored at all. Fix this by looping over the number of stored secrets which is the per sub-list count of stored secrets and not the overall count.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-98648 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 6.18.55, 7.2.9 or 7.3-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 04bb5b2eb9f1d56110f14d3a4e31fa2c65fb026f/116bba758533a139bbede8d717a1371bd6d890f6/f47190b08b71e8482072978373ee88cb2dfbdaf4 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
